THE WRITINGS OF MARK TWAIN, AUTOGRAPH EDITION, Hartford, American Publishing Company,1899-1907. Number 244 of 512 copies, SIGNED as S.L. Clemens and Mark Twain (in his own parentheses) on the limitation leaf. 25 volumes, bound in the publisher s three-quarter morocco and marbled boards with 5-panel gilt spines and marbled endpapers. CONDITION: See photos, which are varied so as to attempt to accurately show exterior condition. Internally every volume is very clean, with no tears, no loose pages, and no foxing. Volume 1 cover board is detached but otherwise whole (see photo). Several volumes have looser joints, and many volumes have scuffs on the spine edges; a few have small tears and missing pieces at spine tips. The majority of volumes are Very Good on the exterior. The front and back covers of all volumes are intact with no damage, breaks or bends. As one early seller promised of this set: "The original, autographed and strictly limited edition of the works of Samuel L. Clemens complete in twenty five volumes. This edition was published at enormous expense, printed on hand made paper water marked. Each set is signed by Clemens, Charles W. Warner, Brander Matthews and the signatures of at least seventeen artists appear in the various volumes. Many so called "autographed editions" have been issued since this particular set was published, but none of them compare with this edition that was really the work of Samuel L.
