Secker, 1924. First Edition. Hardcover. very good-/good+. The volume is bumped on the base of the front panel (near the spine), the corners, the spine ends, and has a small chip on the spine crown. The dust jacket has a darkened spine, a tape residue darkened area near the bottom of the front pane and spine, and is chipped at the spine ends and corners, has a small 1/4" x 1/2" hole in the middle of the spine, and a closed tear at the top and base (1" at the base) on the rear panel. The jacket is sleeved in mylar.

Magnus's memoir of his time with, and subsequent desertion of, the French Foreign Legion was left unpublished upon his death by suicide in 1920, and was here published for the first time, together with a lengthy introduction and biographical sketch by Lawrence, his erstwhile friend. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine and front board lettered in gilt, top edge red. With dust jacket. A near fine copy in the bright jacket that has a short closed tear to head of spine and nicks to extremities. Roberts & Poplawski B14.

Lawrence turned his introduction to Memoirs of the Foreign Legion into the essay the Memoir of Maurice Magnus, which recounts Lawrence's short, tangled relationship with this obscure writer. The essay touched off a literary controversy between Lawrence and Norman Douglas, who felt Lawrence's account was inaccurate and mean-spirited.
