Macmillan Company, 1916. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. Turn of the Twentieth-Century issue. A Very Good and VERY early Volume (no jacket), Originally published in 1914, this is a first edition, Third printing. Very gently bumped crown and foot of spine cloth and corners. Mild spine title dulling. Considered Vachel Lindsay's most famous poem. Only prelims, title and copyright pages have a few spots of foxing, else a very clean and tight copy. Author wrote his poetry meaning for it to be read out loud (or actually sung) - he wanted poetry to be an oral art form. 159 pages plus several pages of publishers back list. No jacket. A wonderful copy. Protected in a mylar slip.

There are several ink stains on the front cover, most notably a 3 cm long red smudge on the front cover near bottom corner. Spine slightly rolled, corners bumped and scuffed. Inscribed by the author in black ink on front free end paper, "Merry Christmas- this year- next year- and every year better- is my wish for Miss Harriet [?] -- Sincerely, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay. Springfield, Illinois, December 25, [1917?]".
