The first UK edition, preceded by the true first US edition of 1915. Understandably without the scarce dust wrapper. Novel by Sinclair Lewis concerning the developing life of protagonist Carl Ericson. Sinclair Lewis was an American writer and playwright, the first US author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930. His works were often critical of American capitalism and materialism during the interwar period.  Rebacked with the original spine and boards restored. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Hardcover, blue cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows some spotting and soiling, front board has a light spot on the center, right side. There is also a small dent along the top edge just above the letter T in trail. Spine has a wrinkle to the cloth just above the title. Internal binding is in much better shape. No hinge issues at boards though there is pulling at page 26 which is starting to show the webbing. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting found. Pages are mildly toned due to age clean. Copyright page states a single publication date of September, 1915, with the Harper date code H-P. Frontispiece was done by Norman Rockwell and still has the tissue guard present. The lower condition grade is only because of the spotting on the exterior cloth.

Minor light stain to edge of front endpaper, else a better than very good, unmarked, tight and clean copy in bright cover gilt. Comes in a custom-made thick archival Mylar jacket.

Name inscribed FLEP, slight toning, else contents appear as unread & unblemished in dark blue cloth covered boards, red gilt decorated, displaying moderate surface/edge/wear, as shown. For the age, a very nice copy.
Second book to appear under Lewis's name and the first American to win the Nobel Prize. The frontispiece by Norman Rockwell is one of his first illustrations in a book at approximately 21 years of age. Lewis' extremely elusive third book and only second novel under his own name. The "Trail of the Hawk" demonstrates insight into Lewis's development as a writer, a craft he would later demonstrate his mastery of in such works as "Babbitt", "Main Street", and "Elmer Gantry".

Ink PRESENTATION from the AUTHOR on the front endpaper reads: "To Robert Lang from the heroic driver of this caravan - Sinclair Lewis". Tipped in adjacent is a newspaper photo of Lewis and his new bride, Dorothy Thompson with the caption "HONEYMOON ON WHEELS SINCLAIR LEWIS who introduced Mr. Babbit to the World, Embarking, With His Bride, at Oxford for a Caravan Trip Through England (Times World Wide Photos)".
