MP3 Audio CD. The Trail of the Hawk: a Comedy of the Seriousness of Life Part I THE ADVENTURE OF YOUTH THE TRAIL OF THE HAWK CHAPTER I Carl Ericson was being naughty. Probably no boy in Joralemon was being naughtier that October Saturday afternoon. He had not half finished the wood-piling which was his punishment for having chased the family rooster thirteen times squawking around the chicken-yard, while playing soldiers with Bennie Rusk. He stood in the middle of the musty woodshed, pessimistically kicking at the scattered wood. His face was stern, as became a man of eight who was a soldier of fortune famed from the front gate to the chicken-yard. An unromantic film of dirt hid the fact that his Scandinavian cheeks were like cream-colored silk stained with rose-petals. A baby Norseman, with only an average boy's prettiness, yet with the whiteness and slenderness of a girl's little finger. A back-yard boy, in baggy jacket and pants, gingham blouse, and cap whose lining oozed back over his… Read More

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1915. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Norman Rockwell. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, blue cloth boards with gilt on front and spine. Exterior shows some spotting and soiling, front board has a light spot on the center, right side. There is also a small dent along the top edge just above the letter T in trail. Spine has a wrinkle to the cloth just above the title. Internal binding is in much better shape. No hinge issues at boards though there is pulling at page 26 which is starting to show the webbing. No signatures or bookplates present, no library markings, no handwriting found. Pages are mildly toned due to age clean. Copyright page states a single publication date of September, 1915, with the Harper date code H-P. Frontispiece was done by Norman Rockwell and still has the tissue guard present. The lower condition grade is only because of the spotting on the exterior cloth.

Name inscribed FLEP, slight toning, else contents appear as unread & unblemished in dark blue cloth covered boards, red gilt decorated, displaying moderate surface/edge/wear, as shown. For the age, a very nice copy.
Second book to appear under Lewis's name and the first American to win the Nobel Prize. The frontispiece by Norman Rockwell is one of his first illustrations in a book at approximately 21 years of age. Lewis' extremely elusive third book and only second novel under his own name. The "Trail of the Hawk" demonstrates insight into Lewis's development as a writer, a craft he would later demonstrate his mastery of in such works as "Babbitt", "Main Street", and "Elmer Gantry".
"The Trail of the Hawk: A Comedy of the Seriousness of Life." The story revolves around the life of Carl Ericson and follows him through his early life to maturity. This humorous and masterfully-written novel will appeal to those with a penchant for the comic, and it is not to be missed by fans and collectors of Sinclair's… Read More
