Frontis portrait in volume 1 of Kane who led this final, and also unsuccessful, expedition. Frontis portrait of Henry Grinnell in volume 2 Tissue guards on the full page illustrations. Fold-out map in volume 1. Foxing on and around tissues and along some page edges. Edgewear on boards. Scrapes on the spine & the red and black title labels. Stain on last page of vol. 1. Straight and sturdy heavy set.

These volumes are quite worn in blue/gray decorative bindings that show a ship in the ice. Sound condition, no loose pages, but many pages show light foxing and evidence of use, such as fingerprints/smudges, a few pencil notations, and minor soiling. Dark brown endpapers, hundreds of steel engravings and a fold out map. Original selling dealer's sticker inside front cover (Raynor, Howe, & Ferry, 76 Bowery, N.Y.) . Great reading or research copy.
