Five raised bands to spine, title and author lettered in gilt on black leather patches to compartments 2 & 4, gilt decorative design to other compartments. Blind stamped decorative device to centre of front and rear board.Large paper copy. 14.5ins x 12ins, [vi], xvii, (i), 276pp plus 38 plates (as listed) of which 14 are in colour. The plates include two versions of the inside of the painted chamber - on on stone and one on copper, pages 48 and 50. A nice clean copy in a very attractive binding. Spine starting with minor wear to the panel edges as with age. Remains well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and sharp-cornered. Physical description; xv, 276 p., 38 plates : illus ; 35 cm. Notes; Text by J. S. Hawkins. After a quarrel with Smith, Hawkins' work was revised by other hands, and his name was omitted at his own request from the title page.
