ULYSSES first saw print in the modernist literary magazine THE LITTLE REVIEW, edited by Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap. Midway through their serialization, issues of the magazine were seized and the editors were brought to trial in the fall of 1920. When they were convicted, ULYSSES was abandoned, only about half of it published. This disaster led to the now iconic publication of the book by Sylvia Beach at Shakespeare & Company, of which this copy is a ninth printing. 8'' x 6.25''. Later blue cloth boards. 736 pages. Leaves with a touch of toning, light edgewear. Firm.

Bound in a later blue-grey colour hardcover with title in gilt on black leather spine. Internally, the original front wrapper and text are present, but not the original rear wrapper. The recent hardcover binding is in very good condition, with just a hint of shelfwear. Internally the edges of the original front cover appear to have been strengthened with good quality paper conservation tape. Binding sound. No inscriptions. 732pp.plus 4pp. additional corrections..

Greek blue wraps and deckle edges. Book condition: Good with bumped and chipped edges, creased and cracked spine, and faint soiling. An illusive copy of Joyce's Ulysses. Unauthorized, printed, and discreetly distributed by Samuel Roth in New York City and Philidelphia, six years before before Ulysses' ban would be lifted in the U.S. Although Roth had formerly published Ulysses' serially in Two Worlds Monthly, these full length copies made to pass as Shakespeare and Co.'s ninth printing, would ulitmately place Roth in jail. Despite its disreputation, it is nevertheless held by several special collections across the U.S. and is an essential character in the history of Ulysses and banned books in 20th century America.

This is the true First American Edition (unauthorized) of 1929. This pirated edition of the 9th Shakespeare And Company ULYSSES was printed by Adolph & Rudolph Loewinger, 230 West 17th St., New York for Samuel and Max Roth. Of the 2000 -3000 copies printed, many copies of this piracy were seized by "The Society for the Suppression of Vice" on October 5, 1929. One of these pirated copies, sent by Joyce to Bennett A. Cerf of Random House was used in setting up the first authorized American Edition of "ULYSSES". Blue cloth covered boards with "ULYSSES / JOYCE" in gilt on spine. The blue printed wrapped (sans flaps as called for by Slocum.) book was bound into this case binding only loosing the original unprinted spine of the wraps. A beautiful clean and tight copy. .
