Description:
George Wylie Henderson. Jule. New York, 1946. Approx. 9" x 5.5." Navy blue cloth boards with dust jacket depicting a shirtless young Black man. First edition. Jule is a semi-autobiographical novel about an African-American man who moves to Harlem from his sleepy hometown in rural Alabama. It follows his journey as he works to find his foothold in the bustling epicenter of Black social and economic power. Author George Henderson was a graduate of the Tuskegee Institute, where he studied printing. He is notable for his unique literary style, which marked a transition between the Harlem Renaissance and the burgeoning protest movement. Common in his work are themes such as autonomy, self-reliance, and strong work ethic; these values were strongly upheld in the Tuskegee curriculum. Dust jacket has light foxing and is uneven at the top edge. Small loss of text on the spine's publisher imprint. Overall, this book is in very good condition.
