Boards have moderate shelf-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light tanning and chipping to leather to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Hole to spine edge of rear board.

Very Good/No Jacket Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. original gilt decorated green leather hardcover, illustrated, 304 pages plus plates of facsimile signatures, all page edges gilt, inner hinge a little weak, covers a little rubbed and faded, otherwise very good.

Henry G. Bohn, London, 1844. Title vignette and engravings within the text throughout, 4-pages of facsimile signatures at end. 8vo (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), 304-pages. Publisher's full crimson grained calf, wide decorative gilt border to sides enclosing a gilt ornament of three cherubs holding aloft a basket of fruit. Mild rubbing to extremities but overall in very good condition and very clean internally. The lower inner joint is split and at some time taped; the rear free endpaper adhered to last blank which has old repair. 1940's gift inscription on front free endpaper.

Leather spine beautifully decorated with four raised bands, two green bands with gilt lettering reading "Books of Gems" and "Wordsworth to Bayly," and blindstamped decoration. Marbled endpapers. Edges and spine show some wear. Pages lightly browned especially at edges, a bit of light foxing on pages here and there, otherwise pages clean, binding strong. Contains 43 b/w engraved illustrations by various artists, listed. Inside of front cover contains sticker from Wm Muddle Book Binder, Gloversville. Two previous owner's have their names in ink on front endpapers.

All edges gilt, coated yellow endpapers. 43 engravings, 4 pages of facsimile signatures of the poets. The covers are rubbed, the front inner hinge cracked, the bottom corners of the pages at the spine are dampstained, spotting to the pages, previous owner inscriptions to the front endpapers, and the page before the half-title has been cut out. Includes "gems" by Swift, Addison, Pope, Gay,Smollett, Goldsmith, Cowper, Chatterton, Burns, etc. with artistic renderings by Bonington, Constable, Gainsborough and others.

With vignette on title page, forty-three further engravings in text and four pages of signatures. Bound in full tan morocco with extensive blind and gilt decorations, five raised bands and dark leather title label on spine. All edges gilt and inner gilt dentelles. Leather a little worn at edges, especially around spine ends and folds but still bright, attractive and firm. Internally, hinges strained between endpapers and a little spotting. An extensive collection of poetry by the most prominent and prolific poets of the 19th century, including Wordsworth, Southey, Byron, Shelley etc, illustrated by leading artists of the time such as R P Bonington, Edward Landseer, David Maclise etc. A truly handsome and tactile volume. 8vo.
