Good. this copy has a still tight binding with peeling to the spine edge, portion missing, the interior is tight and clean of marks. this is Volume 3 of an intended 5 volume series on the natural history of New York, Volume I being published in 1842. James Hall (1811-98), American geologist and palaentologist, was a pioneer in the study of geology in the United States. He was director of the New York Museum of Natural History (1871-98) and directed the Survey of which this volume is part.

Cloth Covers have Blind Stamped Borders and corner motifs. The Gilt Central Motif is Bright. Upper 1/4 of spine is missing but the rest has bright gilt lettering & motif. The Gilt Central Fossil Motif is still Bright. Spine is faded but the the Gilt Lettering and Motif still shows clearly though is no longer bright. Some fraying & wear to top & bottom of spine and corners. Pages are clear of foxing and would be very good if not for a damp stain that slightly discolours the pages. You notice it at the edge of the stain due to capillary action. Doesn't affect the clarity of the plates much. Albany: C. Van Benthuysen, 1859-1861. Hardcover. Fair/No Dust Jacket. Natural History of New York, Geological Survey of New York, Paleontology: Volume III, Containing Descriptions and Figures of the Organic Remains of the Lower Helderberg Group and the Oriskany Sandstone, 1855-1859. Part I: Text and Part II: Plates. Both volumes with quite a bit of wear to the decorative cloth covers, including damages spines. Part I has split between front board and spine, resuling in loose portion of upper spine with some chip missing. Part II has spine covering fully detached, but is preserved and present, laid-in inside front cover. Both boards very loose and starting to detach. Gilt decorations and titling to both books is faded and worn but present and legible. Pages and plates with some foxing and edgwear, but fundamentally clean and intact. Some weakness overall to sewn bindings, but still sound. 532 pages (part I) 120 plates (part II). Please see images.

Title page vignette reproduction of steel plate engraving. Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of illustrations and tables describing the fossils of New York, all with protective tissue guards. Contains descriptions and figures of the fossil brachiopoda of the upper Heldberg, Hamilton, Portage and Chemung groups. Scuffing to boards. Left side tail of spine retains 1 1/2" split in cloth. Head and tail of spine bumped and slightly chipped. Water staining on top (and bottom, to lesser degree) pages near gutter affecting early text pages and some rear plates. Foxing to most pages. Overall good condition.
