Large, heavy book, dark blue cloth with embossed borders and designs to all sides, gilt design and title just good on spine, numerous light brown stains on many pages due to collection of dried flowers, now removed. Slight wear to tips, with very slight wear to spine edges, tiny stain and spots on back, brown edge of brown stain barely visible at top tip on p. 63, then increasing toward first front end papers to occupy the top front right area near tip. Fair copy.

A tight, lovely first edition of these fictional tales about early California life, many first published in "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper" under the title "Some Folks" -- which appears here on the half-title page and as the frontispiece caption. "Romance of California Life" is the best known title of this author and "New York Herald" literary and drama critic (1842-1921) -- although he also authored the anonymous and legendary1876 juvenile title "Helen's Babies.
