First published in 1766, this is an 1800 edition printed by D. Schaw & Co, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh for Manners and Miller. This copy is the two volumes bound into one, in green paper covered boards with the title in gilt to front board. Volume I lacks the title page but has the Advertisement 2pp printed signed by Goldsmith. Volume II retains the title page. Otherwise textually complete. 133pp + 129pp..

Full calf, titled in gilt on the spine; the front cover and first few leaves lacking, considerable chipping to edges, some folded page corners, scattered foxing, a tear across the first text leaf of Rasselas, but internally quite clean and very good otherwise. The boards double-ruled in gilt with corner devices; the spines with five raised bands, the compartments finely decorated in gilt, as are board edges and inner dentelles. Top edge gilt, endpapers marbled. Frontispiece engravings to each volume all with tissue-guards, Vol. IV with an additional frontispiece illustration of Goldsmith's memorial at Westminster Abbey. A first edition plagued by misprints and errors, there are four variants identified with no priority; the present is Temple Scott's variant B, with no catchword on page 213 of volume I, the correct catchword "him" on volume II page 39 and the correct page number on volume II page 159.
