The United States Dispensatory quickly became the most important book of its kind, replacing John Redman Coxe's and James Thacher's earlier efforts (the latter having been the first distincly American dispensatory). The secret of its success lay in the personalities of its authors, both of whom were principal figures of the 1831 Philadelphia revision of the Pharmacopœia, and decisive particpants in all later editions during their lifetimes (into the second half of the 19th century).
