Description:
Indianapolis/New York: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dj. (c.1952). First Edition. Hardcover. [tiny tear in cloth at top of spine, otherwise a solid clean book with only minor shelfwear; jacket has some very shallow chipping at top left edge of front panel and top of spine, one tiny closed tear at top of rear panel]. The author's first novel, about a family brought low by the 1929 stock market crash and ensuing Great Depression -- with the impact manifesting itself most egregiously on the two daughters, one of whom (per the New York Times critic) "marries into misery," while the other "becomes a neurotic monstrosity who not only runs away from reality but who also runs away with the novel." .
