Christensen was a whaler and explorer, his ships Norvegia and Thorshaven were used by Admiral Richard Byrd in the exploration of Antartica. In 1936 Lars, while maping Enderby Land by air with Mrs. Christensen accompanying him in the plane, discovered the Prince Harald Coast. The Lars Christensen Coast and Ingred Christensen Coast are named after them and may be located on a map of the Antartic. The United States recognizes no country's claim on the Antartic.
