A fictionalized, romantic account of the life of Emiliano Zapata, the culmination of screenwriter John Steinbeck's long-standing fascination with the Mexican revolutionary. Steinbeck and director Elia Kazan, both former Communists, are said to have used this film to metaphorically express how they felt Communism in the Soviet Union had gone off the rails. Nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one for Best Supporting Actor for Anthony Quinn. Set in Mexico, shot on location in Mexico, New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas.
