The movements and habits of climbing plants was first printed in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (1865). It first appeared in book form in 1875, much enlarged and revised from the journal publication. Following Origin of Species (1859), Darwin spent much time studying plants to produce evidence for his theory of natural selection. The book stands as his second work on plants, with the first being On the various contrivances by which British and foreign orchids are fertilised by insects (1862). Freeman 844.
