Description:
London, Richard Phillips, n.d. [c. 1804]. . First edition, Tooley's 2nd issue (of 6), with double framed, aquatinted borders, title within outer border, imprint below. 4to (26.7 x 20.8 cm); 31 hand-coloured plates after William Marshall Craig, each with descriptive title and a facing page of descriptive text, light offsetting to text, text watermarked 1803, majority of plates watermarked Whatman 1804, plate 3 watermarked E. & P. 1801; full modern mottled calf by Riviere, triple gilt rule borders to boards, spine gilt in six compartments, green morocco labels to second and foot of spine, all edges gilt, a very handsome copy. The complete suite of hand-coloured plates depicting London street life in the early 1800's. Each plate strikes some telling contrasts, placing some of London's least wealthy salespersons in some of its most exclusive squares. The book was published as a supplement to Richard Phillips' Modern London (1804). Scarce. Abbey Life 271; Tooley 370.
