She was educated in the public schools of Cincinnati and Lockland and attended Knoxville College in Knoxville, Tennessee. She received her M. A. Degree in Creative Writing from Goddard College, Plainfield, Vermont at the age of 42 through its Adult Degree Program. Lula is married to retired DuPont executive John R. Cooper, Ph. D. They have four adult children and seven grandchildren. Lula was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement in Wilmington, Delaware in the 1960's.
