Description:
London and Manchester; Henry Sotheran & Co, 1881., 1881. Hard Cover. SECOND EDITION. Octavo, pp., x, [2], 193. 15 illustrations as called for, including frontispiece with tissue guard, plus 2 plates not called for: a portrait of H.H. Vivian the M.P and a map of the coal fields of South Wales. Black quarter calf with gilt titles to spine and paper-covered green marbled boards. Spine rubbed with 2-inch loss at tail; boards worn to edge. Ownership inscription to ffep dated 1890; scattered light foxing. A Good copy. The 1867 First Edition was issued in a very small impression of only 50 presentation copies, and this, the second edition, was much expanded. Grant-Francis was a Justice of the Peace, Vice President of the Royal Institution of South Wales, member of the Society of Antiquaries and a well-respected historian of the South Wales district.

In black quarter calf, blue marbled boards, corners and edges a little bumped and worn. Spine, gilt title, joint repaired, edges a little worn. Internally, half title, frontis, [2], [5], (vi-x), [1], 2-193 pp, [1], 15 pls (of 15), + 2 extra ( Vivian and River Tawe), printed by Pritchett & Taylor, blue marbled endpapers, small ink dedication to head of half title as well as a dirty thumb mark. In the original black quarter leather with gilt titling and green marbled paper covered boards, corners and edges very bumped and worn with loss of the paper showing through to the boards at the very edges. The leather spine is chipped and rubbed at the top edge, is splitting a little at the edges of the spine but secure and not too noticable, and has lost about an inch at the foot of the spine - but not affecting the Title which is all still present. Internally VERY Good, All hinges secure. NO Inscriptions or Marks. Green marbled endpapers - which match the covers. Half title, including (x) + 193 pp, + [1]. Frontispiece (Swansea from the Sea, with the Cooper Works to the North) plus 14 other plates/illustrations as listed, and a couple of others not called for in the illustration list, but obviously as published.
