Upper board detached, lower board held on by faith. Heavily bruised at the head, tail and corners of the boards with rubbing to the spine bands. Pages gently tanned with scattered spotting throughout and a slight wave to the text block itself. Occasional chips to the edges of the leaves. With notes by Lord Rodney, and an Introduction by a naval officer. Rebound in brown leather with new endpapers. Light rubbing at the edges. Interior very clean and solid .

First edition, 4to, (iii)-xii, (5)-165, (1), 8 advertisement pp, bound without the half title. 30 folding plates, mostly showing ship manoeuvres, with some light browning and several pencilled annotations, edge of one plate soiled. Contemporary half calf, spine neatly restored retaining the original backstrip. "...one of the first British accounts of tactics, as opposed to a work in French translation" (DNB). ESTC calls for a leaf of advertisements following the preliminaries, but does not mention the 8 pages of advertisements at the end. Parts II, III and IV were published in 1797.

Recent half-calf hardback with marbled paper covered boards and maroon gilt lettered title piece to spine. In very good shape: firm, square and showing well. Contents sound and tight, not showing any pen-marks, no evidence of worm or insect damage, and not from a library so no such stamps or labels, just foxed and evenly browned (as usual with this work). Size: 4to (290mm x 220mm). Complete with 52 engraved folding plates showing naval manoeuvres with hand-coloured dispositions. Note: Part one was first published in 1790, with parts two, three and four appearing in 1797; thus this is the first collected edition. One of the most important works on naval tactics published in the age of sail. Hence the fact it was used by Admiral Nelson during the 1805 Battle of Trafalgar.

Second edition, 4to (270 x 210 mm), [6], xv, [1], [5]-287, [1]pp., 52 partially coloured engraved plates of naval manoeuvres, some light foxing and offsetting, cont. half calf Richardson of Newcastle, with their binder's ticket, marbled boards, rubbed, joints starting but holding firm. First published in four parts between 1790 and 1797 this was "one of the first British account of tactics, as opposed to a work in French translation, and for its criticism of the current Royal Naval practice of looking more to signal books to the detriment of fighting instructions."—(ODNB). John Clerk was an 18th-century Scottish author who is best remembered for his books on naval tactics and sea warfare. His works on naval strategies were so popular that Horatio Nelson was known to have used excerpts from his naval essays as orders for his ships. 'An Essay on Naval Tactics' was first published in 1790 and was paramount in establishing new offensive maneuvers used to break through enemy lines. The 'cutting the line' technique was described in detail and became one of the most important naval maneuvers of the late 18th- and 19th-centuries.
This 1804 edition of Clerk's masterpiece includes the expected illustrations depicting ship movement and direction.

Advertisement to the first edition, table of contents, introduction, author's preface. Notice to the binder follows text. Black and white plates throughout text. Binder's tag on front pastedown attributes binding to the Guild of Women-Binders (Tidcombe 115-130). The Guild of Women-Binders very rarely used cloth covered boards for their bindings, which gives evidence that this book could have been used as practice by some of the newer, more novice, binders.
