But our youngest daughter's health is such that of late we are obliged to remain constantly by her to the end that the physician's efforts may be vigilantly & capably seconded, & her slowly improving strength building for the homeward flight in July. My wife & I, join in cordial thanks to you & to Mrs. Howard for your kind invitation & in sharp regrets that we must lose the privilege & pleasure which you offer us. Sincerely yours, S.L. Clemens.
