The book has modest edge rubbing, good hinges, sound text block, light speckling to outer edge of text block and endpapers, clean pages, no names or other markings. The mylar protected dustajcket has a slightly faded spine, edgewear, some foxing to the light colored background of the dustjacket, fairly little paper loss.. Hard Cover. Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

Front panel almost totally detached from spine, internally repaired with archival tissue. Other 3 fold lines have been selectivly reinforced. DJ spine end wear into author & publisher lettering. .

Clear removable mylar cover over the binding. The binding shows wear and has some foxing. The covers are a bit splayed out at the fore edges, since the vellum is generally stiff but flexible. A little wrinkling or bubbling of the paper on the front pastedown. The text is toned at the edges, especially at the fore edge. A limited edition, SIGNED by Carl Van Vechten on the limitation page. This is #54 of 75 copies printed on "Inomachi Japanese Vellum.

We are uncertain of the recipient, but there is a portrait of Beckett, with the date of 3/16/34, listed among Van Vechten's subjects in the Carl Van Vechten Photograph Collection 1932-1956.

A very fine association copy, inscribed in the year of publication to Paul Robeson and his wife Eslanda Cardozo Goode Robeson, American anthropologist, author, actor and civil rights activist. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: " For Paul & Essie Robeson with love from Carl Van Vechten / New York July 16 '28." Van Vechten was astounded by the explosion of artistic creativity in Harlem in the 1920s, and was at the vanguard of promoting Harlem Renaissance figures, including Robeson, Langston Hughes, Ethel Waters, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, and Wallace Thurman. Van Vechten's photographs of Robeson are among the earliest of the artist, and went far to establish his identity with the public.
