Van Vechten was astounded by the explosion of artistic creativity in Harlem in the 1920s, and was at the vanguard of promoting Harlem Renaissance figures, including Robeson, Langston Hughes, Ethel Waters, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, and Wallace Thurman. Van Vechten's photographs of Robeson are among the earliest of the artist, and went far to establish his identity with the public.
