GB: Edward Bull, 1831. Frontispiece (bit browned and offset on to title page) in Vol 1 and folding frontispiece in Vol 2. These books were purchased by Whitehaven Library for £3/10/0 (perhaps in the 1940s) as is shown by the original catalogue entry (in Vol 2) and a newspaper clipping (in Vol 1). It was then described as "full polished calf, the backs richly gilt in compartments, with raised bands and morocco labels". Bookplates of a man with initials FED in ecah volume but (strangely) each of a slightly different design White ink shelf numbers have been mostly rubbed off base of spines leaving slight scarring. Volume 1 has a small label scar to front endpaper. Both endpapers have minor glue residue where labels have been neatly removed. Some spotting to prelims and a few other pages. Otherwsise this is still a rather pleasant set with an interesting provenance. SPECIAL POSTAGE RATES APPLY Packed weight 1500g. . 1st Edition. Hardback. VG-/No DW.
