Description:
Birmingham: Printed by Robert Martin,, 1789. A handsome Georgian bible Second Martin edition, elegantly printed in Baskerville type and with attractive illustrations, this a choice copy in contemporary reversed calf. Martin was Thomas Baskerville's foreman and set up as a rival printer. He was the only other printer to use Baskerville's typeface in his lifetime and continued to print books in a similar style to Baskerville after his death. Martin first published a Bible in 1776. Quarto (257 x 207 mm). Contemporary reversed calf, red morocco label, covers panelled in blind, edges lightly speckled red. With frontispiece and 10 plates. 19th-century family register of Taylor family tipped-in following front endpapers. Aside from trivial wear to joints and extremities, and very light toning to contents and offsetting from plates, a well-preserved copy. ESTC T166040; not in Darlow & Moule.
