Eight maps. Tipped in on the first preface page is a manifest for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company S. S. "Queen" departing Tacoma, Wash. on July 8, 1891. Decorated endpapers. Publisher's elaborate decorated red cloth binding, artfully presenting totem poles, Muir Glacier and an iceberg in Takou Inlet. Two leaves, both plates (Glacier Bay and Auk Indians) are loose. Bookseller tag on ffep (Magetts Brothers, Salt Lake City). A bit shaken, with wear to corners. First thus. A triumph of decorated cover design. Touches on climbing glaciers, natural resources, wildlife and Native Americans (material culture, language, and social structure). Includes an illustrated chapter on mirage cities, which various travelers claimed to see cities hovering above the glaciers and/ir submerged in Glacier Bay/ Uncommon generally, very scarce in as fine condition as found here. Light shelf/edge wear, one tip just starting through, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Black ink lettering, gilt decorative elements, printed endpages, frontispiece. 8vo. 152pp. Illus. (b/w plates).
