Book housed in its original black slipcase, with illustrated title to front panel. "Lysistrata" is a bawdy anti-war comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, first staged in 411 BCE. It is the comic account of one woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War, as Lysistrata convinces the women of Greece to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands as a means of forcing the men to negotiate a peace. Some consider it his greatest work, and it is probably the most anthologized. This limited edition is lavishly illustrated throughout with erotic illustrations by Audrey Beardsley and ancient Athenian artists. One of 1500 signed copies,… Read More

Description:
Vienna: Private, 1913. limited. h/b. Very good, privately printed, limited edition (#165 out of 400), brown full calf boards, with gilt pressed ruling and spine titling, text block firm, pages crisp (only slight foxing).. 12mo (190 x 130 / 7_"" x 5""). Aristophanes most scurrilous play was first performed in Athens around 411 BC. The plot is simple. Lysistrata, frustrated by the many wars Greece wages, gathers her friends, the feisty Kalonika and the very-married Mirrinie to help organise a National Sex Strike. No more sex till we have peace! They camp themselves outside the emblematic Acropolis where they bar all entries and erect a ÔdesexualisedÕ picket line. They will join forces with the strapping Spartan Lampito who orchestrates a similar sex-strike in her homeland. Beardsley's 1896 line drawings were considered by some as his masterpiece and reproduced faithfully in this privately printed, limited edition, German translation.

Description:
Privately printed., 1905.. Loose, as issued, in original publisher's yellow wrappers; wrappers worn and detached.. 4to. (327 x 263 mm).. Eight full-page plates by Aubrey Beardsley. A German reprint of one of Beardsley's finest illustrated books, often considered his masterpiece. From the edition limited to 100 copies. The combination of Beardsley's mature style with its mastery of line and composition, and an hilarious, if obscene wit, makes for a remarkable series of drawings. This early edition closely follows the original 1896 printing, also on Japanese vellum, but here the plates are printed on large paper.
