Description:
Uncommon Czech edition of the Russian Symbolist poet Aleksandr Blok's lyrical epos about the 1917 October Revolution, reproducing the striking illustrations and vignettes by Yuri Annenkov (1889-1974). Translated by the Czech poet and scholar of Russian literature, Bohumil Mathesius (1888-1952), who translated works by numerous Russian writers. Blok's text was first translated by Jaroslav Seifert in 1922 and Mathesius' translation first appeared in 1924. Curiously, given the work's many ambiguities, it is here reprinted by the "NaÅ¡e vojsko" publishing house, which was founded in 1945 and existed through the Communist era to publish military-related works and literature on the Czechoslovak armed forces. Wrappers and typography by Otakar Karlas. With a preface by NadÄžda Slabihoudová. One of 2000 copies. KVK, OCLC show copies at the Czech National Library, Basel University, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, and British Library. Uncommon Czech edition of the Russian Symbolist poet Aleksandr…

Description:
NY: B. W. Huebsch, Inc., 1920. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good. Translated from the Russian and with an introduction by Babette Deutsch and Abraham Yarmolinsky. NY: B. W. Huebsch, Inc., 1920. 12mo. (7" x 4.5"); 23pp.; saddle-stapled in printed wraps. Issued as part of The Freeman Pamphlets series. The first English-language edition of Blok's controversial long poem of 1918, which describes in twelve stanzas the passage of a dozen Bolshevik soldiers through the streets of a blizzardy Petrograd. Written in response to the October Revolution, the poem's political and mystical opacity earned scorn from both intellectuals and revolutionaries, respectively. As the translators note in their introduction: "The main theme is only briefly glimpsed, moving in the obscurity of broken shadows and the intermittent flash of revolutionary fires. It is interrupted by lyric passages, by snatches of street-songs, by echoes of rifle shots, and concludes with the revelation of the twelve led by the…

Description:
First English translation of Alexander Blok's controversial 1918 long poem "The Twelve," a poetic response to the October Revolution, illustrated by the avant-garde artist Mikhail Larionov. Blok (1880-1921) chose to remain in Russia following the Revolution, while Larionov (1881-1964) settled in Paris, with their trajectories representing the political split within the literary and artistic Russian avant-garde. Blok never saw Larionov's illustrations which were completed in Paris. This was a significant creative departure for Larionov whose graphic work was typically done in close collaboration with the author of the text, in keeping with the principles of Futurist bookmaking. Instead, Larionov who unlike Blok did not witness the Revolution in Russia, was likely drawing on his experience of violence during his service in WWI for his illustrations of the poem. "The Twelve" was first published in France in 1920 by the Russian publisher Mishen` (along with Blok's other poem, The Scythians) with…

Description:
St. Petersburg: Alkonost, 1918. Hardcover. Very Good+. Small folio. Original decorative paper over boards, cloth spine, printed in red and black. Some modest wear; overall, a very good copy. Third edition of this extremely important, enigmatic Russian poem pertaining to the revolution, a work which resulted in Blok being ostracized by many of his contemporaries. The first edition consisted of 300 copies only, and the second edition is also rare (not in MOMA). MoMA 171. The long poem describes the march of twelve Bolshevik soldiers (likened to the Twelve Apostles of Christ) through the streets of revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce winter blizzard raging around them. It exhibits mood-creating sounds, polyphonic rhythms, and harsh, slangy language (Encyclopedia Britannica).
