About This Item
Sydney, 1885. Very good condition. A sweeping coastal landscape showing wood and tin structures, with a number of canvas tents in the foreground, homestead in the middle ground, surf breaking on the beach, and the coast road clearly visible in the distance. Bald Hill is one of Illawarra's most beautiful lookouts, and the beach here was the site of Lawrence Hargrave's experiments with box kites. Title in white at lower edge of image. 7 3/4 x 6", applied to card stock.
Henry King (1855?-1923) was a successful New South Wales photographer with studios in George Street, known for his Aboriginal portraits, popular scenic views, and Sydney street scenes. He made his living doing portraiture, but is best known for the high quality of his outdoor and city views. 8 x 6", bright and clean. Trove has the glass plate negative of this photograph (Image Number 31059, 2440, 85/1285-337).
