London and New York: MacMillan and Co, 1891. First English Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First English Edition. xxxiii, [3], 976 pages. Color lithographed frontispiece of the Aurora Borealis. Original blue cloth with blind stamped title and decorations. Titles in gilt on spine. Spine panel still bright and readable, minor wear at the corners and head/tail spine. Textblock edges mildly soiled but overall a bright copy. Corners lightly bumped. An unopened copy. Presents very nicely on the shelf. Cloth. Over 600 illustrations, many of scientific instruments or apparatus used in demonstration of the concepts described. A fascinating view into the thoughts of the times. A translation of the work from the French edition by Amedee conducted mostly by Mr. Colman Starling and Professor R. Mullineux Walmsley. The editor Thompson revised and rewrote the chapters on Dynamo-electric machines and the Telephone "in accordance with modern knowledge.
