About This Item

Amsterdam and New York: N. Israel / Da Capo, 1969. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Facsimile of the Edinburgh edition, 1816. 8vo. Pp. 288. Folding chart. Appendices. Simulated vellum binding. Protective jacket with a scuff on the front panel, else bright and fresh. Campbell's remarkable story recounts a journey to China and Japan and the coast of Alaska. He spent considerable time in the Sandwich Islands, becoming a confidant of King Kamehameha I, and was the king's sailmaker. His activity on the Northwest Coast, however, was less fruitful. He spent a year on Kodiak Island, where he met Baranov, and was shipwrecked on the Island of Sannack (known today as Halibut Island, near present-day Juneau). He suffered frostbite and both of his feet had to be amputated by a Russian surgeon, whose account comprises one of the appendices. See Lada-Mocarski, 71; Hill I, p. 45.
