About This Item
Slight fraying on heel and head of spine and on front hinge
First edition. Signed by the author and his personal copy. Subsequently from the library of the distinguished medievalist Kenneth M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study, whose signature the volume also bears
The last endpapers contain a list of reviews of the work together with a partial list of Prof. La Monte's publications, probably in his handwriting; there are a few neat marginal notes.
John L. La Monte (1902 - 1949) was a distinguished and productive scholar and Byzantinist specializing in the Middle Ages, the Crusades and the Latin Church's establishments in the Holy Land; his career was cut short by his untimely death at the age of 47.
This work is still considered one of the best regarding the organization and political, financial, legal, military and administrative structures of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem and its dependent states. The work concentrates on the institution of the monarchy and its relationships with its nobles and vassals, the influence upon it of the cultures the Crusaders brought with them in the 11th and 12th centuries, and discusses the preservation of classic or pure feudalism in Crusader States while increasing authoritarianism and centralized control in Europe was eclipsing feudalism.
