About This Item

Amsterdam / New York: N. Israel / Da Capo Press, 1968. Facsimile Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Fascimile reprint of the first edition, London, 1789. Small 4to. Pp. 85. Folding charts. Simulated vellum binding. Captain Gilbert sailed the "Charlotte" to transport convicts to Botany Bay. Thereafter he traveled to Canton to secure a cargo of tea on behalf of the East India Company -- an account of that leg of the voyage comprises this volume. It was an important voyage in the exploration of the Pacific and, importantly, the discovery of chains of islands therein. See HILL I, p. 124.
