"The Zimmerman Site has been the focus for two separate projects, one in 1947 and one from 1970 to 1972. The impetus for the original excavations at the site came from the ethnohistorical project at the University of Chicago developed by Sara Jones Tucker. The archaeological project was seen as an attempt to utilize the direct historical approach in identifying the archaeological complex of the Illinois Indians. The archaeological work was undertaken through the combined sponsorship of the Illinois State Museum and the University of Chicago. The program was directed toward determining whether or not Starved Rock was the location of La Salle's Fort St. Louis and toward identifying the location of the Illinois Indian village....." ------ from the Preface.
