About This Item

Very Good. Rare image of three girls from a Yuma-area tribe, holding dolls and dressed in gathered-fiber skirts, 1880s. No photographer stated, but image is numbered "08" in similar fashion to Elias Bonine photographs from this era. Lesser-known photographer Bonine established a studio in Yuma, Arizona in 1881 where he produced images of local tribes in situations mostly staged for the benefit of the public. We have not been able to find this particular image in any search, nor have we come across any examples of lantern slides produced from Bonine's work as most seem to be cabinet cards. The glass lantern slide has a label affixed that reads "Yuma Indians, Yuma Arizona," with another small label marked "34." Image quality is quite good, but was difficult to scan. There is one small flaw to the surface which is visible in scan. ; 48mo 3½" - 4" tall; 1 pp .
