Philadelphia, M. Carey and sons, (1819). 4to. Engr. title,+ iii-xii,+ (1),+ (blank),+ 124 pp.+ 114 engr. plates. Some browning and minor spotting. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with black label, the label somewhat rubbed. Owner’s signature of Carl Magnus Ehnemark, dated Philadelphia 1823. First American edition, complete with the extra appendix plates. Lever’s standard work was first published in London in 1808. The second was published the same year as this first American. It become during the 19th century published in several new editions, both in London and in America. Bra svensk proveniens. Carl Magnus Ehnemark (1803-74) var sjöofficer och från 1857 svensk sjöminister och konteramiral. För att få erfarenhet tog Ehnemark efter kadettskolan 1821 värvning på en amerikansk brigg och jobbade där upp sig till förste styrman. I samband med denna tjänst befann han sig troligen i Phildadelphia 1823. Efter några år i Sverige tog han sedan värning i franska marinen och deltog 1830 i kriget mot Alger och i belägringen av Lissabon. Åter tillbaka i Sverige gjorde han en snabb karriär, ända till amiral och sjöminister. Som minister tillsatte hans flera utredningar för att höja standarden på den svenska flottan och han initierade studieresor till västra Europa och Amerika för att öka kunskapen om de nya marina tekniska förändringarna.
