A deluxe Franklin Library signed, limited edition of Irwin Shaw's novel, which is set against the backdrop of WWII and was later made into a movie starring Montgomery Clift, Marlon Brando and Dean Martin. With black & white illustrations at chapter heads by Dennis Lyall. Includes a special introductory note by the author. Signed by author on a leaf near front of volume. One of an unspecified number in a limited edition. Publisher's "Notes from the Editors" booklet about this work is included. --- Bound in full blue-grey bonded leather covers with four raised bands on spine. Text presented on quality papers. Spine titling, elaborate decorations to covers and spine, and textblock edges (AEG) all in bright gilt. Grey silk moire endpapers, with matching sewn-in satin ribbon placemarker. Volume lacks a dust jacket (as issued). --- An excellent, gift-worthy copy: bright, newish and probably unread, but with slight scratching to textblock edge gilding.
