Detailed studies of the personal, estate, and financial affairs of four Yorkshire landowning families, all of whom belonged to the order of baronets at some time durin gthe 17th and 18th centuries. Roebuck surveys the historiography of landownership during this period, analyzing the growth of baronetage in Yorkshire, the regional economic environment, and the major political and social developments which interacted with the process of economic change. The Hothams, Beaumonts, Constables, and Brights are the main families of focus.
