About This Item
1864. FISHER, George Adams. The Yankee Conscript; or, Eighteen Months in Dixie. Phila.: J.W. Daughaday, 1864. 1st ed. 248pp. Portrait frontis., plates. Orig. blindstamped cloth. Minor rubbing to head of spine, light scattered foxing, else very good or better. Dornbusch II, 1961. "This travelogue of army life in the Trans-Mississippi was obviously designed as a political document for the 1864 election in the North; its strong Union undertones slant the narrative" Nevins I, p.88. "The author attributes to himself much heroism as well as trickery and deceit in making his escape from Texas, where he had gone in 1857 to engage in sheep raising. The narrative, despite its exaggerations, is valuable as a picture of Texas society and politics at the outbreak of the Civil War" Coulter 161.
