About This Item

Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, 1947. Limited Edition. Loose in printed pictorial tan cloth portfolio, with some light soil and minor wear to heel of spine. VERY GOOD. Copy Number 69 of 100 sets, SIGNED. Eleven original blocks, the artist personally drew and cut the key blocks for printing. The five-color silkscreen plate has been hand printed by Dan Wingren the other two-color plates have been printed by letterpress from the original blocks. The separate eight page Introduction also SIGNED with the artist's presentation to former owner and dated May - 2 - 1951. Each plate: 33x26 cm (Mexican (active in America), San Luis Potosi 19071999 Dallas Texas)

Dedicated to Lucy Madison Maverick (1883-1967) was an artist and conservationist in San Antonio, Texas. She was one of six children born to George Madison Maverick (1845-1913) and Mary Elizabeth Vance. Her grandfather was Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803-1870).
Mexican American artist and sculptor Octavio Medellin (1907-1999)
was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He came to the United States in 1920, his family escaping the bloody Mexican Revolution, settling in San Antonio, Texas. He went on to study at the San Antonio School of Art, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Guggenheim Museum. practiced and taught at a succession of prestigious Texas venues, including three years at the Witte Museum of Art and at La Villita, five years as a sculptor-in-residence at North Texas State College (now UNT), four years teaching art students from Southern Methodist University and 21 years teaching sculpture and ceramics at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts when it was in Fair Park. In 1966 Medellin an a group of artists formed the Medellin School of Sculpture at famed western artist Frank Reaughs former studio, El Sibil, where he taught all levels of students in numerous different media. The Medellin School of Sculpture was incorporated under the name of the Creative Arts Center of Dallas which operates today on a two-acre campus in East Dallas. Although Medellin passed away in Bandera Texas in 1999, his art and legacy are very much alive.
