About This Item
Toronto: Belford Brothers, 1875. First Canadian edition. Hardcover. Good. 242 p. 19 cm. Brownish purple cloth with black impressing and gold print. Mylar wrap, removed for photos. Moderate wear to extremities, spine faded. Ink inscription on a front endpaper marking opposite leaf. Paper browned. Marks in margins pp. 238-9.
As well as being the first Canadian edition, this might also be the first edition in English. James R. Osgood of Boston published the first American edition of this story in June or July 1875 and Sampson Low of London published the first British edition in November of that year. As Belford Bros. of Toronto published this edition in 1875, but without a known month, it's possible, though not probable, that it preceded the Boston edition. Taves & Michaluk V014.
