Heavy edgewear, especially at lower spine where small portion of cloth has chipped loose; bookplate on front inner board; intermittent foxing throughout, although many pages clean and unmarked. Simms' novel is set in 16th-century Florida among the French Huguenot colonists who once settled in that region. While The Lily and the Totem is a story of French Huguenots in sixteenth-century Florida, it is not, importantly, a historical romance. Rather, Simms here experimented with a new way in which to relate history by telling history through fictionalized narratives that fill in the gaps between what we do and do not know about a time and place. In old half leather, but front board detached and rear board only holding on by a cord. Ink stamped owner's name of J Restraux Jun [?] to the front free end paper. Pages 31/2 have the outer upper corner cut away and there is a tear in the page at 397/8..

Some spotting and staining, heavier to the front end papers and half title page..

Whipple & Damrell, Boston, 1837. Clothback. Condition: Very Good. No dust jacket. 72 pp. clean, unmarked and lightly foxed, typical of age. Front and rear free endpaper missing, otherwise intact. Title page perforated with Ohio State University stamp and date stamp on inside back cover. Clothback version of this era is vary rare to find in this condition. Unable to find another copy on internet for comparison.
