About This Item

London: J Walker, J Johnson et al, 1809. Leather. Good Only. 5" by 3". Various. A four volume set of the collected works of satirical writer Peter Pindar Complete in four volumes. With an engraved frontispiece and title page to all volumes. Peter Pindar was a pseudonym for John Walcot. Walcot wrote many satirical works and his first were against members of the Royal Academy. He also made many comments at the King and Queen. Further subjects include James Boswell, James Bruce and Hannah More. He had great wit and humour and was very successful at coining effective phrases. In full calf bindings. Externally, rubbed to the spines and to the joints. Loss to the head and tail of spine to volume I. Further loss to the tail of spine to volume II and to the head and tail of spines to volume III. Extremities are also severely rubbed. Hinges and joints to volume I have failed with the boards detached but present. Hinges and joints to volume II are slightly strained but firm. Hinges and joints to volume III are weak and may detach with further handling. Front hinge and joint to volume IV are tender and may weaken with further handling. Rear hinge to volume IV is strained but firm. Internally, all volumes are generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are slightly age toned due to paper used. Worming to the bottom corner of pages throughout volume III, heaviest to the start of the volume but not affecting the text. Instances of scattered spotting to pages. Good Only
