Edition de Luxe, limited to 775 sets printed in clean type on ribbed paper. A beautiful example of this work elegantly bound in sumptuous half crushed morocco signed by Bumpus binders of Oxford known for handsome bindings in classical style. From the library of Lionel Phillips, with his engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown, featuring motto 'Veritas Vincet.' Sir Lionel Phillips was a British-born South African financier, mining magnate and politician. Featuring the collected works of Matthew Arnold, Victorian poet and cultural critic known for his work educating readers on contemporary social issues. The present set is comprised of his poems, essays in criticism, studies of Celtic literature, essays on culture and anarchy, dogma, God and the Bible, St Paul and Protestantism, further mixed essays, and his letters. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait to vol. I. Collated, complete. With half titles. Titles in red and black. Rebound in half crushed levant morocco over cloth covered boards, with gilt to top edges. Gilt panelled spine with centre tool. Renewed plain endpapers. Externally lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Light offsetting to endpaper. Minor spotting to fore and top edge, affecting top margin and occasional leaf particularly to first and last. Pages otherwise bright and clean. Near Fine

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
