About This Item

London: Printed for Alex. Hogg; and sold by all other Booksellers and news-carriers, in town and country, 1780. Hardcover. Very Good. frontis (portrait of Homer), 39 (of 40) plates, 659, [5]p. Rebound in modern brown leather. 26 cm. Backstrip and front cover faded. Lacks the plate which should face page 12 ("Achilles enraged against Agamemnon, swearing by his sceptor"). Later tissue guards present -- probably added when this was rebound. All edges gilt -- also probably added when this was rebound. Map facing page 638 just wide-margined enough that it became a folding map rather than being further trimmed -- again probably when this was rebound. Modest staining in margin on a few leaves. Contents otherwise sound and clean. Includes the final two unnumbered leaves at end (after the unnumbered "Directions to the Book-Binder") which contain a page of publisher's advertisements and a three page List of Subscribers.
