Volume VI of Macmillan's The Works of Charles Kingsley series. An historical novel set in Bideford, North Devon, during the reign of Elizabeth I, this work follows the adventures of a young man who takes a voyage with Francis Drake. Written by Charles Kingsley, an English broad church priest, professor, social reformer, historian, novelist, and poet. Includes previous owner's bookplate which quotes William Ellery Channing: "In the best books, great men talk to us." Bound in full tree calf. Externally, smart with light shelf wear to the extremities. Joints starting but firm. Minor loss to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good
