About This Item

London: Printed for B. Lintot, 1736. with Explanatory Notes and Additions never before printed. In six volumes, totalling approximately 1,400 pages, the title pages printed in red & black, with small ornament to title page Volumes I to III, appendix and index (to the Dunciad) in Volume IV; f'cap. 8vo; mixed bindings, all in full calf, with Volumes I to III in matching dark calf, boards with decorative inner blind panel with corner ornaments, outer double gilt rule borders and gilt edges, the boards lightly rubbed and edges worn, Volumes IV to VI are bound in a simpler style in later (but not modern) lighter speckled calf, with only gilt edges to the boards, all 6 spines with gilt lettered red leather title labels and gilt decorations between raised bands, the decorations on the first three spines more elaborate and worn (especially Volume I), the spine extremities of those volumes slightly chipped, joints starting Volume I; edges sprinkled red Volumes IV to VI; ribbon markers to Volumes I-III; armorial bookplate of Sir Archibald Grant, Bart, of Monymoske, on all upper pastedowns, with his inked signature on the title page of the last three volumes (repeated on the preface in Volume IV), and the signature of Mrs. Grant on the half-title or title page of the first three volumes, a few inked acquisition or shelf marks on endpapers, the lower pastedowns starting to lift in Volumes I and III, some of the hinges starting, a couple of small edge chips or splits, several leaves lightly creased, a few faint marginal damp stains, occasional light foxing and soiling; printed for H. Lintot, London, 1736-1737. Griffith 413, 430, 417, 431, 472 (Volumes V & VI); ESTC T5397, T5401, T5405, T5406, T5409, T5412. *With the pagination and foliation peculiarities recorded by Griffith (and the stubs in Volumes V & VI), but lacking the frontispiece portrait in Volume I. Complicated copyright arrangements led to Pope's Works appearing under varying imprints: in this set those of H. Lintot (Volumes I & III); Lawton Gilliver (Volume II); L. Gilliver & J. Clarke (Volume IV); and T. Cooper (Volumes V & VI). Sir Archibald Grant, 2nd Baronet, of Monymosk[e] (1696-1778), was MP for Aberdeenshire, from 1722 to 1732. He was expelled from the House of Commons for frauds after speculating with the funds of the Charitable Corporation, of which he was a director. He married four times, but the signature 'Mrs Grant' in this set is probably that of his second wife, Anne, whom he married in 1731 and who died some time before 1744. She was the mother of his heir and namesake, the third Baronet.
