Portions of this book were published by the author privately in 1988. Trade Paperback. Toni Packer (1927 – 2013) was a teacher of "meditative inquiry", and the founder of Springwater Center in Springwater, New York. Packer was a former student in the Sanbo Kyodan lineage of Zen Buddhism, and was at one time in line to be the successor of Phillip Kapleau at the Rochester Zen Center. In 1981 she founded the Genesee Valley Zen Center, in Rochester, New York and in 1986 she relocated the center and changed its name, dropping the word Zen to become the Springwater Center for Meditative Inquiry and Retreats. Packer has rejected labels for herself such as a 'teacher' or 'authority'. The word "Zen" was dropped from the Center's name as a result of Packer's move away from Japanese Zen Buddhist traditions. Her discussion of meditative inquiry is informed largely by her own vision, but also by the talks and writings of J. Krishnamurti. This was her first published book. It is about listening and questioning. If a person is willing to start there, which for most of us means starting all over again, then this book will prove an able companion on the journey. This book is a collection of talks she has made at workshops, and letters she has written to people over the years. Her thesis is that truly knowing yourself is not something that occurs from you walking on someone else's path. This is why when she took over her Zen center she transformed it into a 'non-Zen' center. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xviii, 99 pages .
