About This Item
Council Oak Books, 2001. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Association copy, inscribed to Annie Dillard on the title page: "For Annie -- with gratitude, affection, + [illegible], Brad Kessler." Kessler was Dillard's student as Wesleyan, and she had nice things to say about his subsequent acclaimed novel, *Birds in Fall*: "Once in a blue moon a book like Birds in Fall comes along: a wise, sly, and beautifully written novel. Kessler's story, ostensibly about a plane crash, turns out to be a much deeper, much richer retelling of an ancient myth. Mysterious, oracular, this breathtaking book contains multitudes." Kessler is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, a Whiting Award, a Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize for fiction. Fine book in a very good diaphanous jacket with a short tears to upper rear corner and lower spine and some light foxing to flaps. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
