Description:
London: Oxford University Press 1965. (Hardcover) 317pp. Very good in very good dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt and red title to the spine. Bibliography, chronology, notes. The dust jacket is faded, edgeworn and lightly wrinkled, a tape stain on the half-title page, and there is a previous owner's bookplate on the front endpaper and minor ink underlining in the text. "Colonel Jack, it may be readily granted, is a flawed masterpiece. It has never been so popular as Crusoe, nor so acceptable to modern readers as is Moll Flanders. None the less, in the light of recent studies on Defoe's light and thought, studies which have brought us to the verge of being able to get free of Victorian cliches and to reevaluate the achievements of this important eighteenth-century writer, it is clear that Colonel Jack is the least ambiguous of all Defoe's novels". Edited with introduction by Samuel Holt Monk. Series: Oxford English Novels. (Fiction, Adventure and Adventurers).
